Buffalo, NY – New York's eighth judicial district celebrated National Hispanic Heritage Month Friday afternoon in downtown Buffalo.
The event collaborated with Herman Badillo Bilingual Academy and featured musical performances by students as well as traditional ethnic foods.
Buffalo City Court Judge Betty Calvo-Torres said the event was a good way for students and adults to pause for a moment and take pride in what the national recognition means to them.
"Hispanic Heritage month is a celebration of the contributions that all Hispanics have made to the development of this country throughout history, and really the fact that this month came into existence is a recognition of what Hispanics do for this country and will continue to do as Americans," said Judge Calvo-Torres.
Calvo-Torres said that students in attendance appreciate the meaning behind what the event represents.
"Really, being Hispanic means so much more than the foods that we might eat or the music that we might listen to. It really is being proud of who you are and committed to whatever your dreams call you to do and to make sure that we fulfill that dream that our parents had for us when they came to this country," said Judge Calvo-Torres.
The month-long celebration ends October 15th.
