Buffalo, NY – For the first time in 16 years, the New York State United Teachers Union is holding its annual convention in Buffalo. The convention serves as a meeting for the union's representative assembly - its largest policy-making group.
Carl Korn is Chief Press Officer for the United Teachers. He says one of the hardest hit areas of education that the convention will address is the achievement gap. He says it's a great concern - especially in Buffalo.
Korn says the question is how to reform these public school systems to make sure that every child has an opportunity to graduate and attend college. He says it's not just a matter of schools, but how social issues outside of schools are addressed. Korn says that is the key to lifting standards and closing the achievement gap.
