Albany DA Says Spitzer Involved in "Troopergate"

By Christopher Jamele

Buffalo, NY – A report released on Friday by the Albany County District Attorney directly ties former Governor Eliot Spitzer to a plot intended to discredit State Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno.

The case, called "Troopergate," was an effort to use State Police travel records to connect Bruno to questionable use of a state helicopter. Bruno was cleared in the case by Attorney General Andrew Cuomo.

The report issued by District Attorney David Soares shows that Spitzer knew of the scandalous plot and was involved in directing its progress. Spitzer has repeatedly denied knowledge of the plot.

State Republicans are criticizing Soares for the decision not to bring charges against the former governor.

A separate investigation by the GOP-controlled State Senate into the matter is underway.
