Hospice Director Looks Back at Terri Schiavo Controversy

By Mark Scott

St. Bonaventure, NY – Terri Schiavo's death last year sparked a national debate on "end-of-life" issues. Tomorrow, St. Bonaventure University's Bogoni Center will host a day-long conference titled "Grace at the End of Life" that will explore the palliative approach. The keynote address will be delivered by the head of the hospice center where Schiavo was cared for in the last years of her life.

Mary Labyak is chief executive officer of Hospice of the Florida Suncoast. Even before Terri Schiavo arrived at her center, Ms. Labyak was well-known among those involved in the hospice movement nationwide. She runs the nation's largest not-for-profit community based hospice in the United States, carrying for more than 2,300 patients and their families each day.

Ms. Labyak joined Mark Scott on the phone to talk about the Schiavo case and the lessons learned. Click the "listen" icon above to hear their conversation now or use your podcasting software to download it to your computer or iPod.
