Buffalo, NY – State Comptroller Alan Hevesi will undertake a comprehensive audit of the Niagara Power Project. His office confirmed the audit for WBFO News late Wednesday following the release of a statement from Congressman Brian Higgins announcing the financial review.
Higgins says he expects the audit to detail what he describes as the "enormous" profits the Niagara Power Project generates for the New York Power Authority.
"I believe it will support my contention that the Power Authority is pulling hundreds of millions of dollars in profits out of this community," Higgins said. "We should be able to realize greater economic benefit from the Niagara Power Project, which is made possible by the unique natural resources of Western New York."
Higgins is pushing hard for a greater share of those profits for the city of Buffalo as the Power Authority seeks another 50 year license to operate the Niagara Power Project.
