Tonawanda, NY – In response to Erie County's fiscal crisis, two library branches in the Town of Tonawanda will shut down this fall.
The Tonawanda library board voted in favor of closing Greenhaven and Brighton. Board president John Long says the town was promised $2.5 million by County Executive Joel Giambra to help build a hub library on Sherdian Drive if the town closes two branches.
"In view of the fact that we were going to have to close down libraries, we decided to take advantage of the County Executive's offer, and we have a letter of commitment to that effect," Long said. "We have already started to look for a site for a state-of-the-art library here in the Town of Tonawanda."
Greenhaven is slated to close by October 1st. Brighton is scheduled to close by November 1st.
