East Side Fire Claims the Life of a Mother

By Mark Scott

Buffalo, NY – An early morning fire in Buffalo Monday claimed the life of a mother who saved the lives of her three children and a niece.

Fire officials say 35-year-old Milgene Smith helped the four children escape the burning home on Butler Avenue near Jefferson and East Ferry. But she was unable to get out herself.

The children, ranging in age from seven to 18, were taken to Women and Children's Hospital for treatment of burns and smoke inhalation.
