Buffalo, NY – The Buffalo Philharmonic prepares for a return trip to Carnegie Hall. Good morning. I'm Bill Raffel with Music Notes.
The Buffalo Philharmonic is the last of six different ensembles to play in New York City's most prestigious venue. Flutist Cheryl Gobbetti Hoffman and colleagues from the UB Music Department will perform this Saturday (5/22). And with that many Western New Yorkers around, the Carnegie Deli better start offering a Friday fish fry.
If you'd like to hear the BPO in Carnegie, tour packages are available. But you can also catch a preview on Friday and Saturday May?28 and 29 at 8?p.m. in Kleinhans.
Soprano Barbara Quintiliani will join the orchestra as she did on one of the BPO's recent recordings, for the Three Poems of Fiona McLeod. Music Director Joann Falletta says most of the music has a romantic sound.
See Joann Falletta lead the BPO in a Carnegie Preview, on Friday and Saturday May?28 and 29 in Kleinhans, then on Sunday, June?6 in Carnegie hall. The Orchestra will also present a children's matinee on Sunday, May?30, to be repeated in Carnegie on Saturday, June?5.
Chamber Music on Elmwood concludes with two recitals: Friday, May?21 and Sunday, May?23. Both begin at 7?p.m. in the Unitarian Universalist Church, at the corner of Elmwood and West Ferry.
Saint Paul's Cathedral concludes its 41st season of free half-hour recitals with the Cathedral Park Strings on Friday, May?21 at 12:30?p.m.
Organist and composer Hampson Sisler joins the Western New York Chamber Orchestra for the American Premiere of his latest work, "Rondo Symphonique Fugue and Epilogue" on Friday, May?21 at 8?p.m. in Fredonia State's King Concert Hall. Guest Conductor Arkady Leytush will also lead Elgar's Serenade in E?Minor and Beethoven's Symphony Number?8.
The Choir of Blessed Sacrament Church will also debut a new work on that same night, Don Michale Dicie's Amazing Grace. Frank Scinta conducts on Friday, May?21 at 7:30?p.m. at 1025 Delaware Avenue in Buffalo.
Christopher Weber leads Camerata di Sant'Antonio in a spring concert on Saturday, May?22 at 7:30?p.m. in Saint Anthony's Church behind Buffalo City Hall.

As Charles Dickens opened the Tale of Two Cities, "it was the best of times, it was the worst of times." Well, this certainly isn't the worst of times. But as the Buffalo Philharmonic prepares for its big trip, I'm putting together the last edition of Music Notes, at least for awhile, hopefully not for good.
Due to some financial belt tightening at WBFO, Music Notes will disappear at least through September. If I'm out exercising instead of sitting in the studio all summer, I guess it'll be easier for that belt to fit.
So I encourage you attend all those concerts you'd normally hear featured on Music Notes, at the Chautauqua Institution, or the BPO returning to Artpark, not to leave out many outdoor performances.
And if you'd miss Music Notes, I urge to call WBFO not with a complaint but with a pledge. Buy one of those Mini Cooper raffle tickets, underwrite on WBFO if you have a business, or even donate a car in honor of Music Notes, especially if you have a Hyundai Sonata.
