Pigeon, Brown Deny Involvement in Mayoral Recall Effort

By Eileen Buckley

Buffalo, NY – Mayor Masiello told reporters Thursday that he believes former Erie County Democratic Chairman Steve Pigeon is at least one of the people behind a recall effort against him. Masiello says he believes the recall rumors are probably true. But Pigeon is denying any involvement in a possible mayoral recall.

"I believe we need a new mayor," Pigeon said. "How that comes about, I don't know. What Masiello should do for the good of this city is resign."

Others speculate that State Senator Byron Brown is involved. But Brown says it's not true.

"The talk about a recall effort has nothing to do with me or my staff," Brown said. "I think it has more to do with the failed leadership in City Hall.

"I don't support a recall. I would not allow anybody on my staff to support a recall."

And former Mayor and now Council Member-elect Jimmy Griffin also denies involvement. Griffin tried last year to unsuccessfully recall Masiello.

Masiello says he will not be distracted by any renewed efforts.
