As the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janiero came to a close Sunday, Western New York athletes could be proud of the impact they made.
West Seneca native Matt Anderson and https://youtu.be/ycbY9Ul5v1Y">Team USA's Men's Volleyball defeated Russia in five sets, after trailing two sets to one. Anderson was a key contributor in USA's comeback, with 21 points, two blocks and a service ace.
At 25, Anderson was the youngest player on the 2012 U.S. Men’s Olympic Volleyball Team. He has been the team’s leading scorer every season since 2011.
The United States finished the games with 121 total medals, 51 more than runner-up China in the largest margin for a non-boycotted Olympics in nearly a century.
Fredonia native Jenn Suhr failed to be in medal contention in the women's pole vault. She did not clear 4.70 meters and finished in 7th place during Friday's finals.
The 34-year-old had been sick and was "coughing up blood," her husband/coach Rick Suhr said before Friday's final. She has been ill all week, including on Tuesday when she qualified for the medal round.
Rio de Janiero is https://youtu.be/Xyr2NsAW_Jo">Suhr's third Olympic Games. She won gold in the 2012 London Olympics and silver in the Beijing 2008 Olympics.
