With the 19th pick in the NFL Draft, the Buffalo Bills selected Shaq Lawson, All-American defensive end out of Clemson University. While the team will likely look for more defensive help, Dan Lavoie of Buffalo Rumblings.com expects the team to select a quarterback before the draft is finished.
Some were surprised that Lawson was available for the Bills in the 19th draft position. Lavoie says one factor is that Lawson's physical stature, 6-3, 269-pounds, doesn't fit the profile that all NFL teams are seeking. There are also reports that the prospect has a shoulder injury which will eventually require surgery.
As Lavoie points out, the injury didn't prevent Lawson from enjoying an outstanding season in which he led the nation with 25 tackles for a loss and 12.5 sacks.
The Bills are scheduled to have seven more selections through the next five rounds, starting with number 49 (18th in the second round) later today.
Lavoie believes the Bills will be able to add more help for their defense in the second round. Jarran Reed and Reggie Ragland of Alabama, Su'a Cravens of USC and Chris Jones of Mississippi State were among the top prospects who were not drafted in the first round.
A quarterback is also among the draft priorities, Lavoie says. Possibilities include Penn State's Christian Hackenberg, Stanford's Kevin Hogan and Ohio State's Cardale Jones.
