Beyond the Playbook: Bills wrangle Colts

WBFO News file photo

Fans electrified Ralph Wilson Stadium as the Buffalo Bills emerged victorious over the Indianapolis Colts in Sunday's home opener. Quarterback Tyrod Taylor led the Bills to a 27-14 win. WBFO's Jay Moran spoke with Football Analyst Matt Sabuda about the game on Morning Edition.

"Everything we discussed and were hopeful for really happened," says Sabuda. "The Bills made some fantastic plays on both sides of the ball. The crowd was completely electric despite less than ideal weather. When I was in the locker room after the game, virtually every player I passed went out of their way to have high praise for the fans and their impact on the Colts."

"Tyrod Taylor was almost mistake-free. No sacks,no turnovers, 51-yard touchdown pass," notes Sabuda. "He was fantastic. The defense was every bit of a shut down defense as we could expect."

"Definitely going to be tough to pick apart yesterday's game," says Sabuda. He adds though, "I guess if you were to tell me before the game that Sammy Watkins would have no catches and LeSean McCoy would only have 17 carries for 41 yards, I'd day it's probably unlikely that the Bills are going to come away with a win. They're going to want to get these playmakers more involved going forward. I think it was testament to the rest of the team and their ability to make plays."

Sabuda adds, "Rex Ryan became the first coach in Bills history to win his season opening debut. He snapped the all time streak of 0-17 for Bills coaches who started their Buffalo tenure with a loss in the opener."  Sabuda says fans have plenty of reason to get excited for next week when the "dreaded New England Patriots" come to town.

One other significant note, Fans were treated to a Wall of Fame moment during halftime. Former Bills Coach Lou Saban was honored with his name unveiled on the wall.
