The newest member of the Buffalo Sabres took part in the team's morning skate in First Niagara Center. Meanwhile, reaction continues to pour in from Sunday's blockbuster trade.
The Sabres traded Thomas Vanek to the New York Islanders Sunday for Matt Moulson, a 2014 first-round pick and a 2015 second-round pick. Moulson has played 11 games this season, netting six goals and nine points.
New York Hockey Journal beat reporter Dave Ricci says with all the rumors over the past year of Vanek being traded, a lot of players this morning are in, what he calls, "expected shock."
"They weren't overly shocked to see a trade happen, but at the same time, it was a little bit stunning to see a co-captain and a guy who's been here for so long be traded. A lot of them were saying how much they're going to miss him, that he was not only a tremendous player, but a good friend and a good leader and a good guy to have in the room," Ricci told WBFO.
Ricci says Moulson, who is from Mississauga, Ontario, seems happy to be in Buffalo. Moulson said he is familiar with the Western New York area and used to attend Buffalo Bills games.
"He's ready to go and excited to be part of this team. He's aware of the rebuilding process," Ricci said.
Ricci says he think the trade is a good deal for the Sabres, praising the pieces General Manager Darcy Regier was able to acquire in return for Vanek.
"He always does seem to find a way to make some really good trades that benefit the team, and this is another one. You get a player who can instantly help the team and you get two solid, high-round draft picks that can help them with the rebuilding process," Ricci said.
Vanek and Moulson are both set to become unrestricted free agents this summer. Ricci says whether or not Moulson stays in Buffalo long-term is up in the air. He says there is a possibility he will be dealt again before the NHL's trade deadline.
The Sabres are in action Monday night for a game against the Dallas Stars. It will be former Sabres coach Lindy Ruff's first game against his old team since being fired last season.
