The Buffalo Zoo is celebrating the birth of a baby rhino. The zoo announced Wednesday that Tashi, a greater one-horned rhino, has given birth to a 123.5 pound male calf, her fourth offspring.
The occasion marks only the third successful birth of a one-horned rhino via artificial insemination and the second for Tashi through that process. Her third calf, Monica, was the first.
The zoo, in making the announcement on Twitter, called the development "important for the future of the species."
Tashi was pregnant for 488 days. Rhinos have one of the longest gestation periods of any animal.
Mother and baby are said to be bonding and doing well. They will remain out of the public eye for a while as the zoo's animal care and veterinary teams monitor their progress.
A name for the calf has not yet been chosen and a date has not been determined for his public debut.
