Book sale raises money for scholarships

Wednesday marked the 65th year the Buffalo Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) has hosted a book sale. More than 150,000 books, games, DVDs and CDs, separated by genre, occupy space in several rooms at an office building on Millersport Road in Getzville. Older, paperback books are no more than $1 while newer and hardcover books are a few dollars more.

“They all came from donations,” Buffalo AAUW President Betty Preble said of the books. “We’ve been collecting since last September.”

The sale runs through Sunday and proceeds provide scholarships and interest-free loans to young women in high school and college.

“We need more women leading us,” Preble said.

At a recent scholarship celebration, Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul told the crowd to “put yourselves in the history books.”

“She hit the nail on the head.” Preble said about the speech.

Sunday, June 2 is “Bag Day” where admission is free and customers can bring a recyclable grocery bag to fill up with books for $5.
