Voters in New York have given Governor Andrew Cuomo and Senator Chuck Schumer their lowest ratings ever. According to the latest Siena Research Institute poll, Cuomo’s "favorability rating fell to negative 43-50 percent, down from 51-43 percent last month. His job performance rating fell to 35-64 percent, down from 43-56 percent. Senator Chuck Schumer saw his favorability rating drop to 47-46 percent, down from 53-39 percent in January."
Siena pollster, Steve Greenberg says, there isn’t one specific thing he can point to, to account for the drop, as New Yorkers overwhelmingly support new laws such as the Child Victims Act, GEND Act, and election reform being touted by the Governor and in the legislature. He suspects it might have to do with a greater issue in American politics.
“All of the polarization. If you’re a Democrat, you hate everything a Republican says. If you’re a Republican, you hate every single thing a Democrat says. So you have that going on in DC. In Albany, maybe it was too much too quickly. Maybe it’s the fact that while Democrats like the fact that Democrats are in charge of state government the governor, the assembly, the senate. Republicans are very angry, very upset about it, and don’t think it’s good for New York,” Greenberg said.
A senior advisor to Governor Cuomo says in a statement that Siena doesn’t always get their polls right, and that “We’ve had the most productive month in history that finally saw the passage of popular, long stalled legislation and we’re going to continue to move New York forward.”
