An elderly couple in Albion is recovering at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester Thursday morning after their Albion home was engulfed by flames and rocked by explosions.

Albion Police Department Spokesman Nathaniel Scaines says "multiple calls" of smoke, fire and explosions came in to the Orleans County 911 Center Wednesday after 6 p.m.

When first responders arrived on the scene, Scaines says they found the home at 5 Elmwood Ave. "fully engaged" in flames and an elderly man and woman outside burning. One was transported to the hospital by Mercy Flight, the other by ambulance.

No cause is known yet. Scaines said the investigation into what caused the fire and explosions is in its "very early" stages. He says the incident is being investigated by Albion Police, county and state fire investigators, but "it will be a long process" before they know anything further.

No damage estimate was provided. According to Realtor.com, the house is a one-story, 3-bedroom, 2-bath manufactured home with full basement built in 2001 and worth about $100,000.
