Columbus Day holiday sparks protests and activism

The Columbus Day holiday has changed, for some, from a lazy day off from work to a day of activism.

More than a dozen protesters gathered at Christopher Columbus Park, at the corner of Niagara Street and Porter Avenue, Monday demanding the city tear down the park's Christopher Columbus statue.

Joseph Hill was one of the protesters. He says the issue is bigger than the statue.

"Sixty cities have declared Indigenous Peoples Day," he said. "They are no longer celebrating genocide day," he said.

Before the protest began, city workers power-washed spray paint from the Columbus statue .
