New law enforcement app detects fake IDs

Law enforcement officers in New York are employing new, state-of-the-art technology aimed at catching underage people who try to purchase alcohol.

The state's Department of Motor Vehicles has launched a pilot program with an app that can instantly determine if someone is using a fake ID.

The app, developed by a Long Island-based technology company, is only available to law enforcement. It lets police use smartphones to scan a license or ID and match it against driving records from all 50 states.

Officials say the app will let police know within seconds whether an ID is authentic.
