Melting snow damages historic Chautauqua organ

The 111-year-old Massey Memorial Organ at the Chautauqua Institution amphitheater has been damaged by water from melting snow.

Even though the amphitheater was recently rebuilt, a routine inspection found a leak from melting snow had made its way into the organ console, causing damage to the keyboards.

The water permeated a protective covering where the unit was stored backstage.

Officials hope to have the organ restored in time for the 2018 summer season.
