South Buffalo girl injured after fall into open sewer

A 12-year-old girl has been injured after she fell about 12 feet into an open sewer.

Buffalo Fire responded to South Legion Drive near Rutland Street, along Cazenovia Creek in South Buffalo, about 8:30 a.m. after the girl was found trapped. Firefighters lowered a ladder into the sewer and pulled her to safety at about 9 a.m.

Authorities say she suffered a broken leg and was transported by ambulance to Women & Children's Hospital of Buffalo for treatment.

Buffalo Sewer officials say work was not being done in the area. They are investigating why the cover to the sewer was missing from the opening. The cover was found a short distance from the scene.
