New York residents can apply for winter heating assistance starting Monday. More than $325 million in Home Energy Assistance Program money is available to help elderly, low-income and moderate-income state residents this winter.
Eligible households can receive a one-time benefit of up to $626. A family of four with an annual household income of up to $53,000 can qualify for the federally funded program.
Governor Andrew Cuomo says more than 1.4 million households received the heating assistance last year. The money is awarded on a first-come, first served basis, so state officials recommend applying as early as possible.
New York State says 134,635 Western New Yorkers took advantage of HEAP last year. Application information is available on the state Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance web site.
