The Bachelor Apartments are being torn down to make room for a $75 million dollar hotel, apartment and office complex to be built by Ellicott Development.
The existing four-story building was built in 1886 and is believed to be one of the oldest surviving apartment complexes in the country. It was occupied until March of this year when tenants began receiving eviction notices. Preservationists failed to convince the Common Council to grant the building landmark status earlier this year.
A one-block stretch of Tupper between Delaware and Pearl, and parts of Franklin Street, were closed for much of the day Saturday because of the demolition work.
