Senator Charles Schumer is seeking reelection to a fourth term. But instead of delivering stump speeches, Schumer is continuing his customary travels around the state, addressing issues affecting local residents. That approach, some believe, may lift him to Senate Majority Leader.
During a stop in Buffalo yesterday the Brooklyn Democrat said he finds the best way to get reelected is by doing his job.
"I'm not overtly campaigning. The people of Buffalo, people of western New York, know I've worked hard for them hopefully. And then everything else, the politics, works itself out," Schumer told reporters. In fact, he says he's on the phone constantly talking to Democratic Senate candidates around the country about their campaigns.
"My colleagues have already committed to making me the Democratic leader. I'm very flattered and honored by that," Schumer said.
"Whether I'll be Majority or Minority Leader depends on what happens in the election - how many seats the Democrats pick up."
Schumer says people are fed up with the gridlock in Washington and he's already told his colleagues on both sides of the aisle they have to work together to get the middle class moving again.
