As Donald Trump rails about a rigged election, he continues to drift from the message that originally boosted his candidacy. That's the view of Buffalo News Political Reporter Bob McCarthy, who believes Trump would be better served to emphasize his status as a political outsider who can be an agent of change in the White House.
McCarthy shared some of his observations as Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton finish their preparations for tonight's debate in Las Vegas.
As he checks the temperatures of Trump's ardent supporters throughout Western New York, McCarthy is not hearing many who are enthused about the complaints of a supposedly rigged election.
"I do hear his supporters very much rallying around what brought him here in the first place and that's the fact that he's an outsider and that he is going to shake up Washington," McCarthy said.
"If he is going to make any real progress in these next three weeks, he's going to have to get back to those things that his supporters like to hear him say."
With the campaigns coming to a close, McCarthy believes Trump needs to use tonight's debate to get back on message. As for Hillary Clinton, he sees a candidate who is pulling away in the polls and would be well-served to act the part.
"She has won and gained points by acting Presidential. When she veers away from that she loses some of her support," said McCarthy, who admits that holding that stance will not be as simple as it sounds.
"It's going to be very difficult for her tonight because we have to believe that Donald Trump is going for broke in this last debate...and really just go at her."
