Schumer pushes carriers to fix cell phone dead zones

Cell phone carriers across New York state should be expecting a call from Sen. Charles Schumer. The high-ranking Senate Democrat is pushing the companies to improve their service.

On a conference call with reporters on Wednesday, Schumer said that cell phone users across the state reported on his website more than 4,000 dead zones.

"For folks who sign up for a year long or two year long contract it can be downright infuriating. For someone trying to run a business it can be costing them time and revenue," Schumer said.

Dead zones are also a threat to public safety. And the Brooklyn Democrat says, tourism can suffer because visitors rely on GPS. It's a problem reported in cities, suburbs and rural areas. But Schumer says, you'd never know it by looking at the carriers coverage maps.

"So I'll be sharing the locations with the carriers and urging them to come up with a solution that meets the needs of residents in every corner of the state. And I'll make sure these wireless carriers know exactly where the cell phone coverage drops so it can be fixed ASAP," Schumer said.

He's also vowing to "sit on the FCC" until the problem is fixed.
