New campaign seeks to preserve Buffalo's Outer Harbor

Chris Caya WBFO News

A new coalition has been formed to "preserve and protect" Buffalo's waterfront. Nicole Matteson, Executive Director of 21st Century Park on the Outer Harbor says, the goal is to ensure that the land off Furhmann Boulevard stays in the public trust. Matteson says, the best way to protect it for future generations is dedicate it as parkland.

"A lot of us have different visions for the Outer Harbor. What's most important is that we want to keep it in the public trust. Ensure that there's transparency in the planning process. And that we're following the intent of the law. Make sure we're not skipping any steps so that when we do get to enjoy this land it's done safely and with the public's health in mind," Matteson said.

Western New York Environmental Alliance, Advocacy Chair, Lynda Schneekloth says, few cities have the opportunity Buffalo has - to preserve acres of land on a Great Lake. The coalition is holding a public meeting about the new Our Outer Harbor campaign on September 28th at 7:00 p.m. at Riverworks.
