The mysterious death of India Cummings in the Erie County Holding Center became very clear to rush hour traffic Tuesday night. Nearly two dozen protestors walked up Court Street to Niagara Square tangling and then stalling traffic.
"We are protesting the death of India Cummings. We want to see justice for her," said one protester identified as Heron, who led much of the rally while beating a drum.
With no official explanation provided regarding Cummings' death, the Erie County Medical Examiner's Office is investigating the matter. However, that move has done little to calm protesters.
Heron says Cummings' mother has suffered since the death.
"She got to see her daughter once, throughout the whole process. She had been trying to see her for weeks when she was in the Holding Center."
Cummings was arrested February 1 after she allegedly carjacked a vehicle and tried to return to her home town of Rochester.
Another protester, Frederick Douglass, assailed the ongoing issues inside the Holding Center.
"You've been mistreating people, mismedicating people. Suicide rate is the highest anywhere else on record. It's crazy."
Many of the protestors Tuesday were from Rochester, marching up Court Street and stopping traffic. Some protesters were nearly struck by vehicles as drivers refused to stop.
