Kaleida names Ciminelli to develop Women & Children's Hospital site

A soccer complex, retail and public spaces could emerge along Bryant Street in the coming years. The features are part of a $122-million plan for the site of Women & Children's Hospital once its vacated in 2017. Kaleida Health's board of directors favored the proposal in naming Ciminelli Real Estate as the site's designated developer.

Ciminelli earned the distinction following a competition with Ellicott Development, Sinatra & Company and Uniland Development. The companies shared their plans with the Project Advisory Committee, a group of Elmwood Village neighbors and community leaders, who advised the board of directors before a decision was finalized.

"Ideally, we'd like the transaction complete, as well as Ciminelli being well along in their municipal planning process for the project, well before the time we move," said Kaleida spokesperson Michael Hughes.

Construction at the future Oishei Children's Hospital is over 60 percent complete, thanks, in part, to the mild winter weather. The new facility on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus should open in late 2017.

"Some of our clinics will actually be moving to the Coventus Building  right after the first of the year," Hughes said.

"There may be some opportunities (for Ciminelli) to do some preliminary work. Those are some of the details we have to figure out based on real estate that becomes available, parking considerations, things like that."
