More progress is being made in the restoration of the historic Statler City building. Construction workers are now taking apart the powered scaffold system on the Delaware Avenue side of the structure where they've been repairing terra cotta elements in the facade.
Owner Mark Croce says the scaffolding will be down within a few days. The safety walkway which has been along Delaware for years will be down this fall.
"We're on track to probably spend another $4 or $5 million dollars right now on exterior and some interior work. We have the first three levels fully functioning and back in service," Croce said.
"Our next goal is to after finishing this facade testing and stabilization is to come up with a new design or re-design of all the store fronts."
The building's exterior was crumbling after years of neglect by prior owners. Fortunately, there's no sign of interior damage from the water leakage which damaged outside parts of the building.
"Shortly after taking ownership back in 2011, the first task was to rebuild the whole parapet wall all the way around the backside of the building which was leaning and where some of the steel was corroded and in poor condition," Croce said.
"We took down about 12 feet of brick and stone caps and re-stabilized with stainless steel anchors and then rebuilt he whole wall and re-capped it."
