OLV awarded $1M grant for new families shelter

BakerVictoryServices.org

A Niagara County-based foundation is giving $1 million to Our Lady of Victory Homes of Charity of Lackawanna, which funds Baker Victory Services, for the construction of a new house where families of troubled youths can visit their loved ones. The house being funded by the Moore For Kids Foundation will also provide emergency shelter to children removed from homes. Michael Sobaszek, with the Lackawanna Chamber of Commerce and a foster parent, said right now many children displaced on short notice are forced to stay in County Hall for lack of space. "It's traumatic enough. You're already being pulled away from your parents. They don't understand," Sobaszek said. "

That's their life, you're taking them away from it - and now you're going to put them in an office building for a night or two until you find them a home?  That's unacceptable," he said. "This will give them a place they can go to feel safer until permanent arrangements can be made or temporary arrangements can be made to reunite the family."

The new house, estimated at 3,100 square feet, will be built on Martin Road on the grounds of an administrative building slated for demolition.
