Hookah lounge activities draw concern

Mike Desmond/wbfo news

A Buffalo councilmember says he's getting complaints about a hookah lounge. The business was the site of an apparent shooting early Sunday morning.

Councilmember Rasheed Wyatt says he can't do anything about the Habibi Sheesha Hookah Lounge because it's in Amherst although its location on Main Street is in an area where most people don't understand the municipal boundaries.

Amherst Deputy Chief Charles Cohen says lounge owner Amir Abbas says been cooperative.

"We're working with him. A lot of the problems that are related to that business happen outside in the parking lot," Cohen explained.

"So, it's questionable how much or any of this you can directly pin on him. Obviously, his clientele are what's causing the problem."

Witnesses say a dispute inside spilled out onto the street where bullets flew and two-young men were wounded. Cohen says the investigation is continuing. Wyatt wrote to Amherst Supervisor Barry Weinstein asking for a meeting to talk about these cross-border issues.
