Local Muslim leaders reach out to neighbors

Mike Desmond/wbfo news

Dozens of area residents showed up at Noor Mosque in Getzville Sunday night to talk to local Muslim leaders and learn about Islam. Organizers wanted a chance to explain their religion to co-workers, neighbors and friends.

Discussion ranged from how Sharia law works to interpreting the Koran for today. Visitors also had a chance to learn about concerns of Muslims about terrorism carried out in their name. Visitor Mike Reilly says he understood the need for the meeting.

"The Islamaphobia in our country is a bad thing. I know it makes me embarrassed to see some of my countrymen respond this way to some bad person in a community does something to condemn the entire community," Reilly said.

The meeting was apparently scheduled deliberately in advance of Donald Trump's campaign appearance on Sunday. Community leaders say they try hard to fight terror and say there needs to be more propaganda against organizations like ISIS recruiting people in this country.
