Lead remediation in Buffalo gets state funding

Lead remediation efforts in Buffalo will be enhanced with more state funding from Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.

He says nearly 350-thousand dollars from a lead contamination settlement with Mattel and Fisher-Price will be used. Schneiderman says high lead levels in Buffalo are a challenge because of the prevalence of lead-based paint in the city's aging housing stock.

"As we've seen, again, with the recent lead contamination in the water supply of Flint Michigan, investments must be made in lead remediation, and efforts to prevent devastating health consequences particularly for our children."

Schneiderman's office has been funding what's known as the Buffalo Green and Healthy Homes Initiative since 2010. So far, 400 homes owned by low-income families have been remediated under the program at a cost of less than ten thousand dollars per home. Local officials say this latest money will pay for lead removal in another 40 to 50 homes.
