Makowski School cafeteria fails re-inspection

WBFO News file photo

A Buffalo Public School cafeteria, recently shut-down after rodent droppings were discovered, will remain closed.   The Erie County Health Department closed down the cafeteria at the Stanley Makowski Early Childhood Center on Jefferson Avenue.

The problem was initially discovered during an inspection earlier this month. But in a follow up visit this week, the county health department decided to close the cafeteria.

WBFO's Focus on Education Reporter Eileen Buckley caught up with Schools Superintendent Kriner Cash to ask about the problem.

"Any concerns that come up, once I learn about it, we get on it right away, take care of it and move on.  There’s going to be issues in a school system this large," stated Cash. "That was something we took care of right away."

Cash somewhat down played the issue in our request for a response. He was confident the cafeteria would pass re-inspection conducted on Friday morning.

“By noon today, I expect the inspection to be passed and completed students ready to go and eat again on Monday in their regular cafeteria,” responded Cash.

But the health department's Public Information Officer Mary St. Mary tells WBFO it failed Friday morning's inspection.

"Unfortunately, many of the deficiencies had still not been corrected. The cafeteria will remain closed until the results of the re-inspection scheduled for Monday 2/29 is completed," said St. Mary.

The cafeteria will remain closed.  For now box meals, made off premises, were being served to students and faculty.
