As cold as it was last February, temperatures never dropped as low as they did Sunday morning. It was 12 below zero at the airport weather station at 8am, just one degree shy of the record of 13-below set back in 1943.
It got as cold as 19 below in South Wales and a frigid 22 below in the Genesee County community of Alabama.
The wind chill warning that had been in effect since early Saturday was canceled after winds subsided to under five miles per hour.
The bitter cold is responsible for a broken water main that has closed a portion of Wehrle Drive in Amherst. Repairs are underway with hopes of re-opening that road sometime Sunday afternoon.
Temperatures are forecast to rise into the teens Sunday and reach the low 30s Monday.
