Winter has arrived in Western New York with a combination of lake-effect snow warnings and advisories in effect for various parts of Western New York.
National Weather Service Meteorologist Tony Ansuini says lake-effect snow will hit the Southern Tier early and then shift north later in the day.
"Right now, we have a Lake Effect Snow Warning that's in effect today for Southern Erie, Wyoming, Chautauqua and Cattaraugus Counties. These areas will see the bulk of lake snows today, likely bringing an additional 4 to 8 inches," says Ansuini.
"Later on today, we're going to see the lake snows start to shift northward. We have a Lake Effect Snow Advisory that runs this afternoon and early tonight for Northern Erie and Genesee Counties, including the Metro Buffalo area. We'll probably see the snow get into the Southtowns by mid to late afternoon and then reach the Metro Buffalo area, Northtowns over to Batavia by early this evening. So definitely an impact with the evening commute, looking at general accumulations 3 to 6 inches."
Ansuini says we'll experience a more generalized snow across the entire area later tonight and into tomorrow and then tomorrow night, the lake-effect will kick in again in the Southern Tier with the potential of one, two or even three feet of snow in ski country.
