Powerball Jackpot climbs to $900 million

WBFO News photo by Eileen Buckley

Millions of lotto players across the nation, in the U.S. Virgin islands and Puerto Rico are hoping they can hit it big tonight with the Powerball jackpot.

Local lotto players are hopeful that they will be able to claim the largest Powerball jackpot prize. On Saturday  the Powerball jackpot reached $900 million dollars. Sales have been climbing at a rapid pace since Wednesday's $528.5 million drawing rolled over. The New York State Lotto announced that since 11 a.m Saturday, sales had reached $1.7 million per hour.

Scott Neamon of an area Kwikfill station says sales on Powerball tickets are quite heavy.

"The typical Powerball would normally be around $120 million, I think the highest I've seen it before was $420 million, so you're talking almost double of what it normally is. "

Neamon says people already have plans to  retire if they win the Powerball. Saturday's drawing will be the largest in history and will have the largest prize in history.

A $2 ticket gives you a 1 in 292.2 million chance of winning. Sales for tonight's drawing will end at 10 p.m.
