Residents air concerns over growing heroin problem

Mike Desmond/wbfo news

Amherst residents packed the Town Board chamber last night to hear what government is doing about the heroin and prescription drug crisis in the town.

Speakers say statistics show there's a problem. Last year, there were 122 overdoses from heroin and prescription drugs, up sharply from the year before and only the drug Narcan is keeping the death toll from going higher.

According to Assistant District Attorney Paul Bonanno, the issue will be a priority for Acting District Attorney Michael Flaherty.

"Focus of this new Narcotics Bureau is going to be holding accountable those people that profit by getting our kids addicted to heroin and opiates," Bonanno told the gathering.

Those in the audience heard lots of advice, from keeping track of how kids are changing as they grow up and remembering that if a grandparent is in the hospital, don't leave highly dangerous drugs around where someone might find out about an empty home and steal the drugs.
