Kennedy calls for expanding child care

Chris Caya WBFO News

With Governor Andrew Cuomo preparing to release his proposed budget next week, State Senator Timothy Kennedy is asking Cuomo to expand child care. Jackie Roberson, a Buffalo parent says, he doesn't qualify for help under current state guidelines. But Roberson says he has student loans to repay and daycare costs him $200 a week.

"That's $800 per month. My rent alone is $800 a month. So something had to give. I'm not able to pay as many bills as I want to. I'm not able to provide for my son as much as I want to," Roberson said.

The single father said he also gave up pursuing a masters degree in order to put food on the table.

Kennedy is seeking a $2.5 million increase for the program. He says at least 300 local children would benefit.
