A new group has been launched to help expand Uber, Lyft and other ridesharing platforms across the state. The effort is being led by the Internet Association, which represents dozens of well known companies, from Amazon to Zenga. The group's Noah Theran is calling on Albany to give residents access to ridesharing services that are currently available in New York City and across the nation.
"Ridesharing increases access to transportation for the people who need it most. It unlocks economic potential for local businesses and attractions, making them more accessible to all, while providing extra income opportunities for people in the community," Theran said on a conference call Monday.
Theran says ridesharing also increases safety by reducing drunk driving wherever it is available.
The coalition includes Visit Buffalo Niagara. President and CEO Patrick Kaler says ridesharing will make it easier for tourists to get around the region.
"Ridesharing platforms will help tourists get from place to place so that they can enjoy our local restaurants, shop at our local businesses and really get to know the region that we love," Kaler said.
Kaler says it is important to make a good impression on visitors, who he says they should have access to the same services available in other cities.
