State suspends work on 198 pedestrian crossings

WBFO News File Photo

The State Transportation Department is suspending work on constructing two new pedestrian crossings on the Scajaquada Expressway.

DOT officials says the suspension is the result of community concerns over safety. The crossings were planned near the Delaware and Elmwood Avenues ramps.

Officials say they'll talk with community stakeholders and elected leaders about additional traffic calming measures.

The DOT is working on long-term plans to transform the expressway into a corridor suitable for the park setting it's located in.

Several safety improvements, including a lower speed limit, were implemented in the wake of a fatal accident in late May that killed a three-year-old boy inside Delware Park.
