Support growing for earlier closing time

Mike Desmond/wbfo news

Allen Street may be a legendary local drinking and partying street in the neighborhood but the Allentown Association is tiring of some alcohol-fueled behavior. The group is backing the push to move last call from 4 a.m. to 2 a.m.

Association President Jonathan White says problems just seem to get worse in those late-night hours.

"We have one of our members who is a nurse who works on the Medical Campus and she rides her bike to work and she has told me that she has to ride on the sidewalk," White said.

"She is afraid of the patrons who are leaving the bars at the time that she has to go to work. And, I think that in itself is a microcosm of what the problem is at that hour."

White has some bar owners support the push to change the hours because of problems caused to the bars by the drunken behavior and one bar owner came to the association to help change the hours, even before County Clerk Chris Jacobs started the current push for an earlier last call.
