Gates Circle implosion set for Saturday

Chris Caya WBFO News

An old Buffalo landmark is days away from becoming just a memory.

Demolition crews are making the final preparations for the implosion of the former Millard Fillmore Gates Circle Hospital. The 11-story building is set to come down Saturday morning at 7 a.m.

Mayor Byron Brown says for public safety reasons residents are encouraged to stay home and watch the implosion on TV or the Internet.

"But for those who are bold and brave and who want to get up that early in the morning we did set up a public viewing area at West Delevan and Delaware," Brown said.

Preparations are underway for the implosion of the former hospital.

Police will start closing streets around the Gates Circle area beginning at 3 a.m. Saturday.

Brown says the implosion will mark an exciting milestone in the transformation of the former hospital site into a new $150 million mixed use complex.
