A University at Buffalo student has died on a kayaking trip in New Zealand.

Daniel Hollnsteiner, 21, of Staten Island was an undergraduate senior majoring in business administration. Hollnsteiner and student James Robert Murphy, 20, of London, England, were among 11 people kayaking on Lake Tekapo in New Zealand.

Reports indicate that a freak windstorm swamped the group's boats, resulting in the deaths of Hollnsteiner and Murphy. The nine remaining members of the group were treated for hypothermia after spending nearly an hour in the water.

Hollnsteiner was participating in UB's study abroad program at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia.  The kayaking trip was arranged by Monash University.

A UB spokesman said the school has been in contact with Hollnsteiner's family and are offering support and assistance to them.

The university will provide counseling services for Hollnsteiner's friends and fellow students at UB.
