Local group joining Pope Francis at White House reception

Mike Desmond/wbfo news

While there are many people from this area going to attend parts of the papal visit to the United States, three departed Tuesday with special access: Congressman Brian Higgins, Niagara University President Father James Maher and Response to Love Center Executive Director Sister Mary Johnice Rzadkiewicz.

This morning Higgins and the Niagara President will be at the White House for a reception for the Pope.

"He leads by example," Father Maher said of Pope Francis.

"He really tries to connect, living our faith, caring for the poor, caring for environment, demonstrating compassion and protecting life."

This afternoon, Sister Johnice will represent the Catholic Diocese at the canonization of California Franciscan Padre Junipero Serra who founded many missions. Tomorrow morning, she will be Congressman Higgins' guest in the House Chamber for the Pope's speech, with Father Maher outside watching the talk on giant TV screens.
