A new walk kicks off Saturday morning in Niagara Falls, the inaugural African American Male Wellness Walk.
While new here, this event isn't new nationally. The walks began in Columbus, Ohio which now turns out 10,000 men.
Doctor Willie Underwood says he's not expecting quite that many in the Cataract City and would be satisfied with 4,000 for the first time. The urologist and associate professor at Roswell Park Cancer Institute is honorary chairman.
"We have to take charge of our health and we have to make a statement that our lives matter just like everyone else's lives matter," Underwood said.
"So, when you see people come out and support this, basically it says that. It sends a clear message that we care about our lives, we care about our health."
Doctor Underwood says events begin with free health screening at 7 a.m. at the Niagara Arts & Culture Center, continuing through adult and kid's walks through the neighborhood finishing at Gospel Festival 2015.
The doctor says he's a cancer survivor who took charge of his health. He had himself treated after a PSA test showed the presence of prostate cancer.
