Two members of the group "Our Ability" took off Monday on a 12-day trek along the Erie Canal Trail in hopes of raising awareness about disabilities. The pair is marking the 25th anniversary of the American with disabilities Act and promoting the work still needed to be done.
WBFO's Howard Riedel spoke with John Robinson, president of Our Ability, on Morning Edition.
Our Ability President John Robinson and Vice President of Operations Doug Hamlin are beginning their bicycle ride today in Lockport. The pair hopes to draw attention to the need to provide employment and educational opportunities for the disabled among other things.
"Anytime you meet somebody, you talk about your job first," notes Robinson. "For people with disabilities, it's very hard to have a job. It's very hard to find your first job and so everything we do is for employment."
This will be the pairs third journey along the Erie Canal. The two will ride adaptive bicycles, departing from Lockport today and arriving in Albany in 12 days.
