Governor Andrew Cuomo has rebuked a state official for a lack of protection afforded to transgender and gender non-conforming students. The Governor cited the Dignity for All Students Act and its provisions requiring protections for all students from harassment and violence. In a letter released today and directed to Dr. Elizabeth Berlin, the acting Commissioner of the State Education Department, Cuomo excoriated the department for its lack of compliance with the Act, citing a report from the New York Civil Liberties Union.
He is demanding that changes be made immediately.
