Speed, alcohol not ruled out in fatal boating accident

Investigators are looking into whether speed and/or alcohol played a part in a fatal boating accident Thursday morning on Ellicott Creek.  Avery Gardner, 16, of Lockport suffered a fatal head injury when she apparently stood up in the moving boat and struck an overhead bridge. Town of Tonawanda Police confirmed her identity Friday.

The investigation is continuing. Two other people were on the boat at the time. Their names have not been released. Authorities are talking to witnesses and processing physical evidence.

Tonawanda Police say speed and alcohol have not been ruled out as possible contributing factors. The Erie County district attorney's office is considering whether to press any charges.
